Selective Mutism info

I was getting my hair cut tonight and I happened to pick up People magazine and couldn't believe that there was an article about Selective Mutism. It's hard to describe to people about Dylan's personality because it's so rare. Only 1% of the population has it. Then I was searching online and found out that only 3 days ago the Today show did a story on it. Dylan never spoke a word in preschool - not to teachers or students. He was beyond 'shy'. Thankfully in kindergarten he speaks quietly to his teacher in response to direct questions but has never spoken to another child - even when the child asks him simple yes or no questions. But if Dylan sees his teacher after school he turns mute again. Dylan sometimes does better with adults than with children. Dylan speaks one on one to his speech therapist at school, but if she brings in another child to the session he wont speak. It's like a light switch being turned on and off. People who know one side of him have a hard time imagining the other side.

Paul McCartney has written a song about it:

'Even though few people have heard of selective mutism, you get the sense that McCartney not only has heard of it but has actually written a song about it.

Check out the lyrics to "She's Given Up Talking" from his 2001 album Driving Rain:'

Don't say a word
Even in the classroom
Not a dickie bird
Unlike other children
She's seen and never heard
She's given up talking
Don't say a word

You see her in the playground
Standing on her own
Everybody wonders
Why she's all alone
Someone made her angry
Someone's got her scared
She's given up talking
Don't say a word

Ah but when she comes home
It's yap-a-yap-yap
Words are running freely
Like the water from a tap
Her brothers and her sisters
Can't get a word in edgeways
But when she's back at school again
She goes into a daze

Ah but when she comes home
It's yap-a-yap-yap
Words are running freely
Like the water from a tap
Her brothers and her sisters
Can't get a word in edgeways
But when she's back at school again
She goes into a daze

She's given up talking
Don't say a word
Even in the classroom
Not a dickie bird
Unlike other children
She's seen and never heard
She's given up talking
Don't say a word

She's given up talking
She don't say a word
