Dylan - The Social Butterfly?
This kid always likes to keep us guessing! I posted all the stuff about the Selective Mutism, which I still believe that he has, but then he goes and tries to prove us wrong. Of course we didn't say anything to him about the SM, but by total coincidence right after I posted that he started school and speaks to his teachers, classmates and other school staff. I still wouldn't consider him 'outgoing' by any means, but at least he speaks a little. Then the other day he wanted me to see if a girl from his class could come over and play. She came over today and he was not shy at all! And it's not just because we're at home - we've had play dates here before and he'd clam up. But today when this little girl came over he was just as outgoing as he is with family. He was talking to her and running around.... and she was the shy one. Dylan asked me why she wouldn't talk to him. He said "She knows me from school. Why wouldn't she talk to me?" I thought that was a very ironic question coming from him. The child who didn't talk for a whole year in preschool. I actually think it was nice of him to see it from another perspective. To see what it's like to talk to someone and not have them talk back (like all the times kids talk to him and he wont talk back). He'll realize that he can have more fun if he talks. All morning he was anxious for her to arrive. He just sat and watched out the window. "When will she be here!?" And then after she left he just kept talking about her "When can she come over again? Can she stay longer next time?" He tells us where she sits on the bus and what she did in gym class and how she used to sit at the blue table in class but the teacher switched her seat. He really likes her a lot. :) I hope she had fun today and wants to come over again some day.
