Dylan officially started first grade! His new teacher is Mrs. Brantner and I've heard nothing but good things about her from many of the parents who have had children in her previous classes. She's experienced and has even taught for 8 years in Zimbabwe, Africa!
The day before school started Dylan was scarfing his lunch down and said "I'm eating faster so that tomorrow will be here sooner!" So, needless to say he seemed excited to start. The morning of the first day he was very happy and we walked down to the bus stop. The bus was over a half hour late. When it came, he got right on. It was his first full day of school (kindergarten was half day) and it was his first time eating lunch at school. His classroom looks a lot like his kindergarten class...except this year they have desks instead of big tables. The desks are grouped together. Most groups have 6 tables, Dylan's group only has 3 and apparently the one child leaves class early (not sure if he goes into a special class or what), so it's just Dylan and one other boy together. This year he has his own day planner that they're required to use as well as their own math workbooks (instead of photocopied worksheets). He sat with Cora at lunch. Apparently they were told that they must drink their milk with a straw and for some reason Dylan was never given a straw and so he sat there during the entire lunch period just looking at his milk, not able to drink it. Then he had to throw it away. He wouldn't ask for a straw. I think that put a slight damper on the first day. Then the next day I made sure to include a straw in his lunch bag just in case, but I guess he gave his teacher his milk money and then for some reason or another he never got his milk (I think he wasn't sure what to do/where to get it etc..) and he didn't have milk on day 2 either. Finally on the 3rd day he got his milk and he was in a much better mood when he got off the bus. On days 1 and 2 he was very quiet when he got off the bus. The third day he ran off the bus with a big smile. I guess it took a few days to adjust. He still says that he likes kindergarten better because it wasn't as long. Gym class used to be his favorite...until he had art class! They didn't have art class in kindergarten so it was something new and he really likes it. I think the only teacher that he has this year that he had last year was his music teacher. They got a new gym teacher (a boy!) and a new librarian.
You all know that Dylan never spoke to another kid at school the past two years, ever. Apparently he talked to a kid already this year! A HUGE milestone! I asked him more about it and I can't seem to get any details out of him... he "forgets". I know that in his class his teacher partners up the kids and has them talk one-on-one and I'm wondering if that was when he talked. Dylan was able to talk out loud in class when asked a question, but when it came to talking on a personal level after class, he went silent. It seems as if it's a formal setting where he's expected to say something specific (a specific answer, a specific line in the school musical etc..), he was able to do it. But when it comes to a personal, casual conversation, he closes up. Anyway, since he was expected by his teacher to talk about a particular subject with the other child, I think he was able to do it. I want to ask him more about it, but I didn't want to make a big deal about it. I doubt he talked a lot, but I think he talked some.
It's been very different at home during the day with Dylan in school. I really do miss him and I wish the school day wasn't quite so long - but it is nice to spend some extra time with Cameron and Gabriel. Dylan, being 6, often steals the show when it comes to vying for attention. When Cam starts preschool in a few days, I'll have 2 hours alone with Gabriel 3 days a week. He wont know what to do with all the attention! I can't imagine the house with only me and a 1 yr old. That hasn't happened since 2003!
Dylan has also started soccer again. This year he's playing for Red Land Soccer. His team is Mexico (It goes by country). He's very excited about soccer! He's only had one practice so far and missed most of it due to a mixup with his team list, but he already has his uniform and he has his first game this Saturday.
Cam will hopefully be starting soccer... Dylan played when he started preschool, so I assumed Cameron would too. He's all excited about it! Then I found out that the age cut off is Sept. 1... Cam doesn't turn 4 til Oct. 7. Since he's starting 4 yr old preschool, I just assumed that he'd play soccer (even though he's actually starting preschool early because his bday is after the cutoff for that too, but they're letting him in). I thought the age cutoff would be Oct. 1 like for preschool, but it's actually a month before that. I hope they let him in...not sure what I'll do otherwise. He's very excited to start.
