Grandma got each of the boys a hermit crab at the beach. They have been playing with these crabs all day every day. The other day I got a book from the library about hermit crabs and realized that they can't live alone in one of those plastic containers that they sell you when you buy the crab, they need an entire "crabitat"! (habitat for crabs). They need to live with other crabs and they need moist soil, sand, stones, extra shells, purified water, salt water, crab food, sponges, caves to hid in, things to climb... and TOYS! Yep, toys! The container has to have perfect moisture settings and temperature. Who'd have thought a $2 crab would turn into a family pet. Anyway, I took the boys to PetSmart today and got them all the items they need (now watch these suckers die tomorrow or something). You can tell that I'm a mom of all boys - we have hermit crabs, frogs, fish, a dog and we have various bugs living in containers on a daily basis.... most of these things totally gross me out, but I know how much they love them. Of course Cameron left PetSmart bawling because he couldn't have a turtle. :) Did you know that you need to give hermit crabs baths!? It's fun for the boys now, but some hermit crabs live for 6-15 years!! And if they're really cared for they can live to be 30! At least that's what the books say, I wouldn't doubt if they only last a few weeks. Who knows - we still have the same frog and fish that we got a few years ago.
We are SO amazed and happy with how Dylan is adjusting to kindergarten. After not speaking for an entire year in preschool and camp, he now talks to his teacher, the other kids, the librarian etc... He told me about how he told the librarian that he went to the cabin and to the beach and how a big wave knocked him over a few times. He told his teacher that I forgot to pack him a snack today (oops). I'm just so relieved that he likes it so much. With preschool and camp, 2-3 days a week was too much for him, but he went all 5 days this week and seemed to love every minute of it. There is a little girl in his class that was in his preschool class (he went to her bday party earlier this summer) and he asked me if I could ask her mommy if she could come over some day -- and he also wanted to take her to Lake Tobias with us and miniature golfing... could this be his first crush? ...maybe it's just a familiar face from preschool. hhmmm. We overheard one little boy at the preschool open house say "I can't wait to go to college so that I can have a girlfriend!" I thought that was hilarious - and I was surprised that a kindergartener knew what college was and about having a girlfriend. Kids grow up too fast. I can't believe Dylan is in kindergarten and that he just lost his first tooth. It seems like only yesterday that he got his first tooth and now it's already gone.
I feel like I've been telling more stories about Dylan than about Cameron and Gabriel, but it's only because there is so much happening at once for him. Soon it'll be Cam's bday and Gabriel will be doing new things and I'll have more to share.
